Job Description

The intern will work closely with the resident psychologists and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive psychological services to patients. This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting, working with diverse patient populations and contributing to their mental health and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychological assessments and evaluations to understand patients’ presenting concerns, diagnostic needs, and treatment goals.
  • Implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy, to address patients’ mental health challenges.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and patients’ needs.
  • Facilitate individual and group therapy sessions to support patients in developing coping skills, managing emotions, and improving overall mental health functioning.
  • Provide crisis intervention services for patients experiencing acute psychological distress or psychiatric emergencies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation, including progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries, in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and strategies for promoting recovery and resilience.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as attending seminars, workshops, and case conferences, to enhance clinical skills and stay abreast of best practices in the field.
  • Adhere to professional codes of ethics and standards of practice, maintaining confidentiality and respecting patients’ rights and dignity at all times.

Skill & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in clinical psychology or counseling psychology from a recognized institution.
  • Licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist in Kenya.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Willingness to adhere to hospital policies and procedures and uphold ethical guidelines in clinical practice.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting or with psychological assessment and intervention techniques is preferred but not required.
